How wrong could I be?
Even though I narrowed my search down to about 80 machines, I still found it extremely difficult to find the one that I wanted. I decided to continue with my research and read a lot of reviews. The more reviews that the product has, the better for me, as I can get a bigger picture of the pros and cons of each product.
I finally narrowed my search down to 3 products and here are my opinions of the best stainless steel bean to cup coffee machine. I will create 3 posts as they will be long posts to cover everything.
Stainless Steel Bean to Cup Coffee Machine
Barista Express Coffee Machine and Grinder.
This machine took me quite a while to fully research. Considering it got such a high amazon rating I knew that I had to look elsewhere. There has been a quite a bit of talk about the reviews and their sincerity, it does pay to look at other sites, just to get a better overall opinion. Hence the reason this took a long time to come to a conclusion.
Terminology & Technology
With a lot of coffee machines, the terminology and technology does become confusing. Conical burr, is an example. Some will know all about these and some people like me have no idea what it means. Therefore, I decided to explain in detail these terms.
This post may well be a bit long, but I feel that so you can understand what this machine actually does I need to explain the features in more detail.
Barista Express Grinder
This stainless steel bean to cup coffee machine has an built in grinder with 18 settings, giving you a wide range of coffee coarseness from fine to coarse. It takes 1 minute to create the perfect espresso. One little bit of advice here is to make sure that you only use fresh beans, check the expiry date on every bag of beans you buy.
A conical burr grinder and dose control delivers consistent weights of ground coffee every time.
What is PID?
Proportional-Integral-Derivative, you see what I mean now by terminology. Anyway, this is the mechanism that controls the water temperature by controlling the boiler heater element. It will increase the boiler temperature gradually until it reaches it set point. Long term it will increase the taste of your coffee.
Temperature stability is important when making your coffee. It will maintain the set point temperature (+/- 1 degree). A coffee machine without PID will not have as much control over the boiler temperature and will affect the taste of your coffee.
Low Pressure Pre-Infusion
This is a process of actually reducing the brewing pressure. To ensure that your coffee tastes better water needs to be introduced slowly, pre-infusion will ensure that your ground beans will receive a low pressure soaking, which will gradually increase to full brewing pressure. Some machines give you the option to turn this on/off but it does make the coffee taste better.
A thermobloc acts in exactly the same manner as a central heating boiler. It heats the water when required. A lot of espresso machines heat the full container of water first. A Thermocoil heating system does make a more consistent coffee.

A The standard bar pressure for a stainless steel bean to cup coffee machine is 9 bar. Although some machines will advertise more bar pressure, 9 bar is the ideal option.
The size of a espresso coffee machine, for me is quite an important factor when searching for your ideal machine. Some of us have a limited space in our kitchens, so re-arranging it just to fit it a coffee machine is not ideal.
Here are the sizes of the Barista Express Coffee Machine and Grinder: –
- Length = 30mm
- Height = 40mm
- Width = 32mm
- Weight = 11kg
I find that knowing the dimensions before hand makes it easier to narrow down your selection. Not a lot of use getting a coffee machine to fit in a space 30mm wide if your machine is 35mm. We all have an ideal place in our kitchen for our espresso coffee machine.
